An account of road biking, fixed gear, racing, commuting, and everything in between by an American living in Norway.

Women's Team Handball
Norway just won the World Cup. I just cannot get past how strange the sport is- apparently they can run three steps with the ball without "dribbling" (as we would call it in basketball). It just looks wrong. Does the US even have a team?

Team Handball, never heard of such a game, sounds like a blend of Rugby and basketball, is there a hoop, or a wall to bounce the ball off of as in American handball? By the way what is fixed gear? How will I ever know if you respond to this?
The Norwegian typewriter; just the numbers and those prounciation type keys are different from the english, but it really must throw one off when typing. LA
Hey, I read these comments. Team Handball is like a cross between basketball and field hockey or soccer- they run around a basketball court and try to score goals by throwing a ball into a net.
Fixed gear is a bike that has one gear and no freewheel- in other words, it doesn't coast- kinda like a spin bike that you can actually ride.
LA to EP... I missed your phone call sadly enough. I sent a couple of emails to simulacra. I don't know if you're able to access that address or not, if not then blogging you (if that's what this is called) is a good thing. Well it is probably quite late there and you're probably sound asleep or fretting the night away or doing whatever one does late at night in Stavanger Norway. I've read some more of your archives, very enjoyable, perhaps in part because I know you, or more accurately have a history of sorts with you so there is a connection to your musings and commentary. I think you write in a way that allows even someone who doesn't know you to be stimulated to think about a variety of things as you're commenting on things that we all, or at least most of us, experience, the quotidian type things, the banal that contain within them so much more than one might think, such as the cat's having emotions and possibly regressing. I found that to be interesting, thought provoking and something I know I've thought about and commented on to others's as well. Anyways, I appreciate your blog site. Again if anything it'll be away to stay in touch, to keep about each other's life, if one finds oneself so inclined. It's the first time I've ever responded to a blog let alone been on a blog website. Maybe I'll learn something, actually already have. Later expatriate.
Yes, the US has a team. Unfortunately, they didn't qualify for the upcoming World Championships. You can check out the Women's Team Site here: http://www.usateamhandballwomen.com/
More information on Team Handball is in my blog including some analysis on why the US isn't very good.
Fellow Minnesotan here. I actually played this sport of handball way back in 10th grade gym class (i.e. 1980). It seemed to me to be kind of a contrived sport. Being a goalie in handball truly sucks. I'm not sure what's worse, being a handball goalie or being a lacrosse goalie.
I am an American living in Norway, a dilettante road racer, a crazed bicycle commuter, a music producer on hiatus.
This blog started as a chronicle of my racing misadventures, my commuting foibles, my love of fixed gear. Then, one day, life just got in the way. Now I write about a little bit of everything.

When does one move from a "dilletante biker" to whatever the next level would be, semi-pro?

I will give you a call later.

FYI: Norway and Denmark probably lead the world in terms of the popularity of Women's Team Handball
